MISSION
The BioInspired and BioDesigned Functional Materials Lab focuses on developing organic and hybrid electronic materials that mimic the mechanical and physiological properties of biological systems. There are four main research areas: (1) Dynamically adaptive electronic materials, (2) Additive manufacturing of functional metamaterials, (3) Organic reconfigurable and transformative materials, and (4) Slime mold-aided bio-designed networks. These biomimetic materials serve as building blocks for patient-specific, customizable biomedical devices that can detect, sense, and stimulate biomarkers.
Our lab is comprised of an interdisciplinary group of scientists and engineers with complimentary strength in polymer synthesis, characterization, mechanics, device fabrication, and additive manufacturing. Our research bolsters the sustainability of the environment, whereas our lab culture cultivates the sustainability of the human mind.
